As Amelia pulled her car into the familiar driveway, she glanced at the cheesecake buckled up with the passenger side seat belt. She hadn’t been sure how well the restraint would work to keep the pan from sliding around, but as it turned out, seat belts worked almost as well on food as they did on people.

Turning the key back to kill the ignition, Amelia heaved a quiet sigh of relief.

She glanced away from the garage door to the living room’s picture window, but Joanna had already drawn the blinds for the night. Daffodils and tulips had sprouted in the bed of mulch beneath the window. Most visitors to the house thought Joanna had planted the flowers, but they were wrong. Trevor had been the green thumb of the family, and he’d passed that hobby on to his daughter.

Flower boxes were fastened to the wrought iron railing around the covered porch. The soil was bare now, but soon, Amelia would take her niece on a springtime trip to the plant nursery. They’d pick out a new color scheme for the porch, all while throwing out ideas for the following year.

Though Amelia was grateful to be so near her remaining family, she felt an aching tug at her heart when she looked at the old house.

Blinking repeatedly, Amelia pulled herself out of the introspection and reached over to unbuckle the cheesecake. As grateful as she was for her coworkers and her job at the FBI, she was glad to be out of the office for the weekend.

The previous day’s raid on the warehouse had gone according to plan. Even Irish Mafia drug kingpins knew better than to try to test their luck against the full weight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Amelia had received an update on Fiona Donahue the moment she arrived back at the field office. Though Fiona had been beaten to within an inch of her life, suffered a concussion, and broken several bones, she was expected to make a full—albeit slow—recovery.

And for her part in the rescue, Amelia received high-fives and words of encouragement sporadically through the rest of the workday, from agents in nearly every department.

Outwardly, she appeared to graciously accept their praise, all the while feeling awkward and wishing for a place to hide. As far as she was concerned, she’d just done what any other agent in her position would do.

Aside from slinking around the office to avoid the inevitable compliments, Amelia had spent her Friday catching up on paperwork and going over the Irish drug smuggling case with the United States Attorney’s Office.

Though the shipment hadn’t come into the warehouse when they conducted their raid to collect Agent Donahue, there were enough pieces of incriminating evidence—such as illegal firearms, some of which undoubtedly had a body count—for the prosecution to make a compelling case.

As she stepped out into the brisk spring evening, Amelia pushed the thoughts of the Irish mob out of her head.

Her sister-in-law, Joanna, had invited Amelia to dinner with her and the two kids—Amelia’s niece and nephew, Hailey and Nolan.
